Fast, objective vision screening from six months through adulthood

The Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener VS100S-B is a handheld, portable autorefractor designed to screen patients from six months of age through adulthood.

The device captures binocular measurements from a non-contact distance of approximately 3.3 feet and provides an easy-to-understand result indicating whether all measurements are within the selected screening criteria or whether a complete eye examination is recommended.

The Spot Vision Screener assists qualified healthcare professionals with identifying potential refractive errors and ocular misalignment. It is a screening device and does not replace a comprehensive examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Screens both eyes within seconds

Point-and-shoot auto-capture technology measures both eyes simultaneously within seconds.

The device provides visual and audible fixation targets to help maintain patient attention, making it practical for pediatric patients, non-verbal individuals, patients with disabilities, and others who may have difficulty completing chart-based vision testing.

Screens for six amblyopia risk factors

The Spot Vision Screener supports objective screening for potential indications of:

  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • Astigmatism
  • Anisometropia
  • Strabismus
  • Anisocoria

Screening results should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional. The device does not provide a final diagnosis and its measurements should not be used directly to prescribe corrective eyewear.

Touchscreen-guided workflow

The rear touchscreen provides subject alignment, data entry, screening controls, patient queues, result review, device settings, and record-management functions.

On-screen instructions guide the user through positioning and image capture. Once screening is complete, the device displays the measurements and indicates whether a complete eye examination is recommended according to the configured screening criteria.

Binocular and monocular screening

The device supports simultaneous binocular screening as well as monocular screening when required.

Each screening evaluates:

  • Spherical equivalent
  • Cylindrical refractive error
  • Cylindrical axis
  • Pupil size
  • Pupillary distance
  • Gaze deviation

The screening criteria may be configured by authorized users. Changes to referral criteria should be performed only by qualified vision professionals.

Wireless printing and data export

The Spot Vision Screener supports built-in driverless wireless printing to compatible network printers.

Screening summary reports can also be exported through:

  • Wireless network connection
  • USB drive
  • Compatible electronic medical record workflow
  • Welch Allyn SpotConnect application

SpotConnect integration for Epic and Cerner is available separately and is not included with the standard VS100S-B configuration.

Portable rechargeable operation

The internal rechargeable battery provides more than four hours of operation after a full charge.

A fully depleted battery requires approximately two hours to recharge. Welch Allyn recommends battery replacement through an authorized repair facility after approximately 2.5 years under normal use.

Factory calibrated

The Spot Vision Screener is calibrated during manufacturing and does not require routine field calibration after delivery.

Routine maintenance consists primarily of keeping the front optical glass, touchscreen, and exterior surfaces clean and inspecting the device and accessories for damage.

Compact handheld design

The device measures approximately 8.5 × 6.75 × 4.75 inches and weighs approximately 2.55 lb.

Its compact design and included carrying case support movement between examination rooms, pediatric clinics, schools, community-screening programs, occupational-health locations, and other approved healthcare environments.
